As well as being the Executive Director of the UWC International Office, I am an alumnus of Pearson College UWC (1985) in Canada. I worked with the UWC National Committee in Germany and served as its pro bono Chair from 2008 to 2015 as well as supporting the Bosch Foundation as a founder of UWC Robert Bosch College.

Prior to UWC I worked in a number of international development organisations (INGO’s) in London. My roles developed from supporting young people’s informal educational programmes at Save the Children into empowering young people to call for change. I moved on to a broader political campaigning role at WaterAid and then into a more specific communications role at Merlin which included leading on funding appeals and crisis communications. My last role at Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) saw me leading teams on advocacy, campaigning, media, digital and customer care. I am also a school governor at a local primary school in the UK.

Having worked with national committees for ten years, I see the great value in bringing our volunteers together to learn from each other and to provide UWC International with invaluable input.

During the Europe Region Meeting, I am not only looking forward to meeting all participants and learning even more about how each NC operates, but am very much looking forward to tackling issues such as mental health and student wellbeing. These meetings are a great opportunity to tackle the big topics on all of our agendas, and to understand how to support to overcome our challenges in the future.

Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Preparation

Participants will be guided through a workshop, which can be implemented in national committees, on student preparation. The workshop was developed by a UWC with contributions from UWC Pastoral Care staff, and other specialists. The vision is that alongside a rigorous education driven by UWC mission & values, students also learn resilience and emotional intelligence and develop practical skills to become happier, healthier individuals who flourish in life beyond UWC.

Sope Adekola

School and College Support and Development Officer

I have worked in international development, mostly with young people, in Burundi and the South of Italy, mostly focusing on resource development, capacity building and youth development. My most recent role, before joining UWC International, was working on the DFID funded International Citizens Service (ICS) programme which sends 18-25 year olds to developing communities around the world to assist grass-root organisations.

I look forward to being a part of the Europe Region Meeting, as I am certain that it will be a great space for learning from and sharing ideas with national committee members. I am equally certain that we will all leave with renewed energy to continue delivering on UWC's mission.

UWC Short Courses (Workshop)

The workshop will cover an introduction to what UWC short courses are, the strategic goals for the next few years, types of courses, including examples of courses that have been run over the years. There will be space for discussion on the benefits, to an NC, of running a short course which include; NC promotion, reaching a wider demographic of young people with UWCs mission and also NC volunteer engagement. Participants will also be encouraged to present any challenges they have faced, or think they will, when trying to run a course. After this workshop, participants should have a better idea of what a UWC short course is, the benefits of running one and feel better able to make an informed decision on whether to run a course in the near future.

I worked for the International Organization for Migration in Cairo focussing on humanitarian assistance to migrants and migration policy with governments in the Middle East and Africa. After Cairo, I obtained a Masters Degree in Public Affairs from Princeton University and returned to the Middle East after graduation, working as an economic consultant with government clients while at EY in Kuwait and Dubai. I have been a member of UWC National Committee for the Gulf Cooperation Countries and has taken part in UWC selections in Italy, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.

Carol has more than 20 years professional fundraising expertise in the UK and US. She has helped guide several community-based fundraising volunteer boards to create sustainable fundraising campaigns and events and increase revenue year on year. She joined the UWC movement in August 2017 as Major Donor Manager at the UWC International Office in London.

As Engagement and Outreach Coordinator at the UWC International Office, I work across the UWC movement with schools and colleges, alumni groups, governance groups and national committees. I see the huge value added when these UWC stakeholders successfully engage with the UWC community and also collaborate through strategic partnerships. I hope to share with national committees our collective knowledge, highlight best practice examples and opportunities for both engagement and outreach to maximise the reach and impact of UWC globally.

This session is an opportunity for participants to share their experiences of UWC Day from a national committee perspective. Online Communication Tools

Social media, websites and easy to use graphic design tools - tips for producing engaging content and professional communications. Communication doesn't need to be expensive or complicated. There are a number of free online tools NCs can use to add value to all communications. We will be looking at which tools are available and how they can be used.

Videos: The power of the moving image (Workshop)

How to easily create videos and increase impact. Video is the most effective tool to reach viewers these days. Social media, newsletters, thank-you videos, the possibilities are endless. And you don't even need to be a video expert to use it! We will look at easy to implement solutions you can use in different settings.

After having been at CEO level in the fashion whole sale business, I gladly took the opportunity to shift into something as meaningful as UWC nine years ago. Never regretted it, never routine, always challenging and fun. My job at UWC Denmark is 20 H a week and I do all the administrative work, the bookkeeping, the contact with the students and the parents, the colleges, the admission officers, the State, the Board, the National Committee and the contact to and with the alumni and volunteers. I do not participate in fundraising or selection directly, but only on the sideline.

How to, when to and what to do -debate. Q&A . How to get an office, how to get hired staff and how to pay for it all. The Danish way of running an office with one person and loads of alumni. I will simply explain how Denmark found the possibility to have an office, fundraise simply for this and I e-mail my presentation to those that will/might find it interesting.

Euri Vidal

National Committee of Spain

I graduated from Waterford Kamhlaba in 2003. Euri went on to study International Development with a focus on climate change. I have worked for the Energy and Sustainability Office at the University of Edinburgh and I am currently the coordinator of two adult education projects within the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. 'A Tale of Two futures' is using stories of people and organisations saving energy and resources to inspire others to start new projects. 'Environmental Learning Illustrated' will create a graphic novel to help participants to learn what they can do to reduce their environmental impact.

Dreaming Big to Reduce the UWC Movement's Environmental Impact (Workshop)

The International Office has awarded a small grant to the Spanish National Committee to help other NCs to reduce their environmental impact. The workshop will look at the actions that the Spanish Committee has undertaken in this area during its annual selection processes. The workshop will be an opportunity for European NCs to express their interest in participating in this pilot project and also to explore the possibility of creating a platform for NCs to contribute to the sustainable goals of UWC in the coming year by engaging with both currents students and alumni.
